Karnala Fort

The Karnala fort is also known as 'Funnel Hill'. The Karnala fort is a hill fort in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel town. This Karnala fort is about 55 km away from Mumbai. In 12th century the fort was under the control of Nizamshah. The fort remains under the control of Nizamshahi until 15th century. After that the fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj. After the period of Shivaji Maharaj there are some of defeaters such as Angres, Peshawas. And finally that is in 1818 British captured this fort.

Right now the fort is totally protected by Karnala Bird Sanctuary. There is no problem of water and food as there is water cistern on top of the fort and hotels near to the fort are available.


Attracting points are:

There are many things on the top the fort. Actually this fort is divided into two forts that is lower one and higher one level. At higher level there is 125 feet high pillar basalt pillar. This is known with Pandu's tower. At that time this pillar was used to watch the surrounding area. But right now the condition of this tower is not good. Also one can able to see other forts such as Prabalgad and Rajmanchi from the top of this Karnala fort.

By Rail

Nearest�Railhead�is Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Mumbai).

By Road

State transport offer bus regular and frequent services from Mumbai and Pune to Raigad. Kolhapur (250 km), Pune (150 km), Mumbai (140 km) and Mahabaleshwar (75 km). Public bus charge is less than Rs 2 per km.
