Alandi is located on the banks of the Indrayani River, 25 km (16 mi) east of Pune, India. It has an average elevation of 577 metres (1,893 feet).
Alandi is a well known pilgrim center for Hindus. Situated at about 25 kilometer east of Pune, Alandi houses the Samadhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar, one of the most revered Sages of Maharashtra. River Indryani flows by it.
History of Alandi
The place became famous after famous sage Dnyaneshwar moved here and stayed till the end of his life. Sage dnyaneshwar holds a prominent place in the history of Maharashtra as he is credited with popularizing the worship of lord Panduranga in the entire region through his religious sermons and speeches. It was here that he wrote his famous holly book Dnyaneshwari.
Alandi has also the distinction of having a prehistoric collection of Shivling. In one of the Saint Dnyaneshwar's verses he speaks of it being called "Siddheshwar". The name of the reigning deity of the place as also one of the names of Shiva. He states then that a collection of eighty-four Sidhas meet or exist here. Under a dense green and flower laden canopy emitting a heavenly fragrance and birds singing celestial tunes. This stanza is to be found in Saint Dnyaneshwar's book about the power of chanting Hari's name. The book is called Haripath. Even till this day Haripath is recited by countless rich and poor in Maharashtra. They experience its beauty and believe in its powers as also in the person who created them.
Palakhi fair that is organized here during the Hindi month of Asadh is very popular among tourists. A huge number of people walk for nearly 150 km from Alandi to Pandharpur to celebrate this festival.
Apart from this, the city has also got several other spectacular sites. Some of them are; Ram temple, Mukti temple, Math of Swami Hariharendra and Vitthal Rakhumai temple.
